What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Not the Scary Procedure You've Heard About

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation. The truth is, it's the treatment that stops the pain, not causes it. If the nerve inside your tooth has become infected or inflamed, root canal treatment removes the infection and saves the tooth.

Using modern anaesthetics and techniques, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. We carefully clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, then seal it to prevent reinfection.

The alternative to root canal is extraction, which means losing the tooth entirely. Root canal lets you keep your natural tooth, maintain your bite, and avoid the cost and complexity of replacement options like implants or bridges.

Your Appointment

How It Works

1

Diagnosis

We examine the tooth and take x-rays to confirm infection and assess the root canals that need treating.

2

Anaesthetic

The tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthetic. You won't feel any pain during the procedure.

3

Clean & Disinfect

We carefully access the inside of the tooth, remove all infected tissue, and disinfect the root canals.

4

Seal & Restore

The cleaned canals are sealed, and the tooth is restored. In many cases, a crown is recommended for long-term strength.

Common Questions

Root Canal FAQ

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. With modern anaesthetics, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a filling. Root canal is the treatment that relieves pain from an infected tooth.

How long does it take?

Most root canals are completed in one or two appointments of about 60 to 90 minutes each. Front teeth are quicker, back teeth may take a little longer.

What's the success rate?

Root canal treatment has a success rate of over 95%. With proper care and a crown to protect the tooth, a root-treated tooth can last the rest of your life.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

In most cases, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth and restores it to full strength. We'll discuss this during your treatment.

Is extraction better than root canal?

Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better option. Extraction leads to bone loss and requires replacement with an implant, bridge, or denture, all of which cost more.

Can I drive home afterwards?

Yes. Root canal uses local anaesthetic only, so you're perfectly fine to drive. You may feel some mild tenderness for a day or two after, which is completely normal.

I went to Dentozen first time. I felt very lucky to pick this place. Normally I am very nervous when I visit dentist, this time I was not. The filling she made I was very happy. Her hand was light and came out of place with big smile and pain free. Thank you Neha Patel.

I was leaving London the next day to travel to NZ when my crown became loose. I emailed Dentozen that night, not expecting a reply. I was amazingly given an appointment for early the very next morning on a bank holiday. My crown was very securely fixed, taking away the high stress of it falling out on my massive journey home. Plus a bonus are that their fees are very reasonable!! The Dentozen team are superstars!

I called Dentozen whilst I was experiencing dreadful toothache. I was seen pretty much immediately on the Sunday and after X-rays it was found I needed root canal. The service and comfort I received from Dr Patel and Nurse Fabiana was just amazing. I actually did not feel a thing. They were kind and supportive the whole time. I cannot recommend this place enough.
